This article assumed (incorrectly) that the time spent putting rubbish in the trash would have otherwise been spent productively earning, which is an invalid base assumption. For a start, the choice is not usually "take to bin now or drop on floor", usually there is the option to put in pocket until we are near a bin anyway, resulting in very very low (if not zero) opportunity cost.
