Your advice wanted - starting a business in a recession

My friend Margie, who's at business school, is less optimistic than me about the recession. She thinks things will be dismal for a long time yet.

However, she's still considering starting a business when her course is finished. So what kind of company would you recommend starting up in a recession?

And if I'm right after all and the recovery starts soon, what sort of companies would be especially successful in a recovering economy?

Well...I still have years and years...and years to go.
And being a pessimist it's hard to see myself starting up my very own (successful) business as much as I'd like to in the future...
Perhaps I could work alongside EAT and help amend some of their many flaws such as:

1.Putting way too much rocket in their sandwiches - they might as well produce a rocket sandwich
2.Serving soup that's too hot eat (or drink? or even classing recipes such as Chili Con Carne and Italian Ragu & Pasta, as soup)
3.The confusing 'Tall' and 'Grande' cup sizes. EAT is an English company - whatever happened to small, medium and large?
4.Complicated menu boards
5.45p for a tiny slice of white bread?

I could post my views out to the big guns but hey, last time they did a survey asking for our thoughts and suggestions they responded with "You told us what you think and we've listened"...unfortunately it seemed that they were blind to see the two words that were on everyone's responses - Pay Rise (though I'd say more like Slave Labour).
Enough of my rambling - I have just realised how off-track I've gone with the initial topic. I guess this comes to show my passion for hating.
Moving on swiftly,what kind of business would you start up being an optimist? I'm interested to know as I'm currently clueless!
